Opposition claim House Speaker biased

Port-of-Spain: The Opposition People's National Movement (PNM) says it is prepared to stay out of Parliament, if the Speaker of the House of Representatives Wade Mark does not change the way he presides over the House.

The Opposition hosted a news conference today and accused the House Speaker of muzzling Members of Parliament who speak out against the Government. The Opposition says it will now be moving to hold an urgent meeting with the Speaker, saying there is a need to protect Parliament.

The PNM raised 12 issues it says are affecting the development and running of the country, the most serious of which is the actions of the Speaker.

The compalints follow last Friday's sitting of the Lower House, where Arouca Maloney MP Alicia Hospedales was shut-down by the Speaker several times when she attempted to raise the bribery allegations against Minister Jack Warner.

Oposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley now says its clear the House Speaker is over-stepping his bounds and what's worse anticipating what MPs may say and preventing anything which appears to be anti-government from being ventilated.

The Opposition says not only is this serious but but a dangerous precedent is being set by the Speaker and this must be stopped. To this end, Dr Rowley says the Opposition will be meeting with Speaker Wade Mark.
