Opposition capitalising on Sharma issue – President

Georgetown : President Bharrat Jagdeo said today the oppositrion uses the suspension of CNS TV 6 as an opportunity to capitalise on their “lacklustre elections campaign.”

“They have very little energy, they have very little vision… they are stuck in bitterness and criticisms so it’s always about discrimination, corruption (and) everything else under the sun,” President Jagdeo said.

The Channel 6 television station owner was slapped with a four-month suspension that took effect from October 4, following a meeting he and his wife had with President Jagdeo on September 30 at the Office of the President.
The ban came in the form of a ruling which President Jagdeo made on an Advisory Committee on Broadcasting (ACB) recommendation following the probe of a commentary aired on the station that was found to be seditious.

The ACB had recommended a minimum suspension of six months for the “offensive” commentary but was reduced to four months after Sharma argued the case that staff whose livelihood depend on the station would be affected.
President Jagdeo said the meeting ended after Savitree Sharma suggested four months of suspension and this was accepted.

TrakkerNews spoke with Savitree Sharma this afternoon and she said the only reason she suggested a four month suspension is because the President indicated to her at the meeting that he was suspending the licence for eight months.
