New Harbour Bridge within six years

Robeson-bennGeorgetown: A new Demerara Harbour Bridge should be constructed within the next six years. In the meantime, upgrades will be done to the existing bridge this year to ensure durability.

This was made known by Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn in response to APNU’s Joseph Harmon’s claim that the bridge will not last.

The minister maintains that the bridge is in a good condition, given that it has been around since 1978.

For last year, a total of six million vehicles traversed the bridge on a daily basis, which is a five point five increase over the previous year.

However, Minister Benn said there is need to reduce the loading of heavy duty vehicles by encouraging trucks to be transported elsewhere.

Additionally, more water taxi stations will be considered as a mean of reducing the volumes of traffic on the bridge.
