Georgetown : Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony said that the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is working to roll-out a school programme, which goes just beyond playing cricket in the field. It involves incorporating cricket into areas of academic studies such as Mathematics, English, Geography and other such subjects.
According to a Government release, Minister Anthony explained that even textbooks have already been developed in this regard. He noted that, “this programme is going to be a very interesting one and Guyana is one of the pilot countries…before the end of the year we are hoping to launch this programme.”
A few months ago, a WICB team that was in Guyana, selected several schools to be part of this programme.
The Minister said that while international competitions are important, focus also has to be placed on the development of the game, as well as those that are part of it; making them well rounded athletes.
“We feel that having specialised clinics will be good for the development of the sport and also by working with children in school through this medium will also help to build the sport.”
The Ministry plans to establish a cricket academy, which will be a permanent facility where people can be trained by both local and international experts. At this facility, cricketers will be able to benefit from specialised workshops on areas such as fielding, bowling and batting to further their skills.
In an effort to regulate the game, the Government has tabled the Cricket Administration Bill, which is currently before a parliamentary select committee.
The introduction of this Bill is in keeping with an agreement made in February this year at the level of the Inter-Parliamentary Party Dialogue (IPPD). The three Parties had agreed that there was need for a governance framework for the administration of cricket in Guyana especially after the court rendered the controversial Guyana Cricket.
