Port-of-Spain: A new committee has been established to come up with a Natonal Building Code within one year.
The members of the multi-disciplinary committee which will be chaired by Shyankaran Lalla received their instruments of appointment this morning from Housing Minsiter Dr Roodal Moonilal.
The 19-member committee represents a wide cross-section of organisations including various government ministries, disaster preparedness bodies, as well as the Contractors Association and the Joint Consutlative Council for the Construction Industry.
Minsiter Dr Moonilal says while the commitee will ensure the safety of citizens it will also keep contractors in check.
He says the Government was forced to spend $100 million to repair houses built by the Housing Development Corporation, after they took office.
This he says was as a result of poor construction standards.
