New $40M Rice Factory to be commissioned in January

Georgetown: Minister of Agriculture, Leslie Ramsammy says that a larger quantity of pure rice seeds will be produced by farmers next years since a New Rice Seed Factory will be commissioned in January 2013.

The Minister of Agriculture made this announcement during one of his press briefing Saturday at the Ministry’s boardroom office.

The New Factory which is an Agriculture Sector Support Program (ASSP) is located at #56 Village, Berbice and is intended to increase Guyana’s capacity to produce pure variety rice seeds for farmers.

The Factory cost a total of $40M and the factory will aid rice farmers in obtaining pure variety seeds for the variety of rice they are planting.

The Minister added that there is a need for about 180,000 bags of seed paddy to support the rice industry in Guyana, while the level of production is expanding and there will be a need for more than 180,000 bags of seed paddy.
