National TB fight given boost with portable digital x-ray machine

Georgetown : The Georgetown Chest Clinic’s, National Tuberculosis Programme was presented with a portable digital x-ray unit from PEPFAR through funding from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the International Association Francois-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB).

The x-ray unit will make it easier for the screening for TB patients and according to Dr. Jetendra Mohanlall, TB programme manager, since the machine is portable it will serve as a great help in preventing this plague.

He stated that aggressive screening will be given to vulnerable groups, and in the near future provision will be made to take the unit into prisons for screening patients.

Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said “Guyana can now say we are providing an almost complete diagnostic service for our people when it comes to TB. At all levels we have improved,”

He challenged those at the TB unit to provide high quality service, so that no Guyanese would be without the services they need to protect themselves and to ensure that if they have TB it is not a deadly disease.

In the near future TB patients will benefit from a $30 M inpatient facility that will be equipped with 28 beds.
