National Hero exempt from land tax

Bridgetown.

The Government of Barbados has amended  the Land Tax Act, to exempt Barbados only living National Hero Sir Garfield Sobers exempt from paying land taxes on his primary residence.

An amendment to the Land Tax Act giving effect to the measure was approved by the House of Assembly last week, and passed in the Senate yesterday.

Sir Garfield, one of greatest crickets of all time was made a National Hero on April  14, 1998, he receivesa tax emempt monthly stipends from the Government under a ministerial order approved by the House of Assemby in November 2000.

Leader of Government Business, Senator Maxine McClean who piloted the amendment said  the change was a small token of paying tribute to the massive contribution Sir Garfield had made to Barbados and the region on and off the field of play.

McClean stated that Sir Garfield had always exemplified excellence and had maintained his humble roots to this day.
