More humane face to HIV/AIDs programme

Bridgetown.

The Government of Barbados is promising a more humane face and community based focus to HIV/AIDS.

This was revealed by Minister of Family Stephen Lashley, while piloting a resolution for $9 million to supplement the estimates for the national HIV/AIDS programme in the House of Assembly this afternoon.

Lashley told Parliament the former government had negotiated a US$35 million loan in 2007with the World Bank which ends in October 2013, with the Government having to provide US$65 million in counterpart funds.

He said there were some concerns about the slow spending of the funds since the onset of the global recession, these new programmes have been carefully selected to shore up the initiative, while increasing the expenditure.

Lashley added it was vital to have the national HIV/AIDS programmes functional after the World Bank initiative ends.
