More foster parents needed in society-CPA

Georgetown: Under the theme “Become a foster parent and make a difference in a child’s life” the Child Care and Protection Agency’s (CPA) is observing foster care month as scores of abused and abandoned children are living in orphanages across Guyana.

According to statistics, there are more than 150 children in foster care, and another 700 children in orphanges/homes.  As such the CPA need willing persons to becoming foster parents.

Children who were removed from their primary care giver homes are either placed in a private or government orphanages/homes.

Persons willing to be a part of the programe apply to the CPA foster care programme and they can complete an application provided by the agency before a home study and visit are executed.

The agency would then conduct criminal and medical checks on the applicant before an appointment is made with the director of the Child Care and Protection Agency. The director has the authority to approve or deny the application. If the approval is granted, the applicant will be placed on a foster care register.

It was noted that when persons take on the responsibility of being foster parents, case workers monitor the situation to ensure that children receive the care they need. Foster families are also provided with training and financial assistance from the Human Services and Social Security Ministry.
