Miraculous escape for driver trapped in wreckage

St. John’s Antigua : Twenty-five-year-old Gladwin Burton had God on his side yesterday as he escaped serious injury when he lost control of his car, ran off All Saints Road and crashed into a parked flatbed trailer.

Burton was trapped in his black Honda Accord motorcar A 76001 for about half an hour as it was wedged under the trailer.

The accident occurred around 6:30 am.

The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) worker was pulled to safety after firemen cut away parts of the car using the ‘jaws of life’.

Emergency Medical Services transported him to Mount St John’s Medical Centre and relatives said, miraculously, Burton only sustained minor cuts and scrapes about the body.

He is reportedly complaining of head and chest pain.

X-rays did not show any fractures, a relative said.

The victim’s aunt Adelta Burton said she received a call about the accident about 6:30 am yesterday.

“He wasn’t going to work, he was actually going to the hospital at the time. He is usually picked up and taken to work but because he was going to the hospital he was driving. The road was wet and apparently he skidded off,” she said.

Police issued a press statement stating that the accident victim, who also owns the car, was travelling from west along the All Saints Road in the vicinity of Lics Ltd, when he apparently lost control of his vehicle and it skidded off the southern side of the road.

As a result of hitting the trailer, the roof of the car was ripped away and the windshield shattered.
