Ministry of Education stepping-up Efforts to reduce Absenteeism

Ministry of EducationGeorgetown:  The Ministry’s Schools Welfare Department in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, the Guyana Police Force visited ‘E’ Field, South Sophia investigating the absence of school-aged children from school.

With-in a few hours and thorough walk of the ‘E’ Field Sophia area the joint teams found forty-eight children who were not in school. During visits to the homes of some of the children, parents and guardians were told about their responsibility to ensure that their children receive an education.

It was noted that more males were absent and that there seem to be a significant number of secondary school aged children who were either at home or playing with friends at the time officers visited the area.

This is the first of many campaigns slated for 2014 as the ministry intends to intensify efforts to reduce nonattendance. The ministry will continue to collaborate with all the relevant stakeholders and endeavors to have monthly truancy campaigns.
