Ministers call on Integrity Commission chairman to resign

Tobago: Government ministers are this afternoon calling for the resignation of the chairman of the Integrity Commission Dr Eric St Cyr.

This follows comments which St Cyr reportedly made regarding the brewing controversy surrounding the prime minister's stay at the home of Maureen and Ralph Sopaul, the owners of Gopaul and Company, which reportedly was successful in a $40 million bid at state owned National Petroleum Limited.

On Wednesday the Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley served notice that he was asking the Integrity Commission to investigate the prime minister and St Cyr is reported to have said that the prime minister should have stayed at a hotel. He said he had made the comments in a private capacity and not as chairman of the commission.

However, following a Cabinet meeting in Tobago, ministers made it clear that anything the chairman says compromises his position and any investigation the commission has been compromised. As such they believe that he only has one avenue open to him.

Asked whether the prime minister would ask the president to revoke St Cyr's appointment, Finance Minister Winston Dookeran said there is no suggestion that the prme minister will ask for the appointment to be revoked. He said they only wanted to make public their concerns about what they describe as his ill-timed statements.

Meantime Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner says he will be sending St Cyr a letter asking him to step down.
