Minister Rohee raises concerns over recent spate in crime

Georgetown : Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee today voiced his concern over the recent killings and acts of violence and outlined several measures that the ministry is working on to ensure better law and order.

Speaking at a press conference at his Brickdam office, Minister Rohee said, “whether it is string of incidences, robbery under arms, resulting in deaths or whether it is an individual incident, the Ministry of Home Affairs will always be concerned about those matters, we are not insensitive, we are not numb to such eventualities.”

The Minister said as per its responsibility, the ministry has been ensuring that adequate resources are presented through the budget to the Guyana Police Force to make sure it has the resources it needs to fulfill its lawful responsibilities. He said also that the ministry has been making resources available to ensure that the policy of the Force, as distinct from the operations, is reflective of central government’s thrust in fighting and detecting crime.

In moving forward, the Home Affairs Minister said that additional wire tapping facilities will be utilised more frequently, in crime fighting. The aim is to use more expansive, and make more resources available to informants to provide what will be called human intelligence to law enforcement agencies

“So apart from the technological interventions, there is also the human intel (intelligence) side that is required because crime fighting depends on intelligence, and that is the focus we intend to pursue over the next months,” he said adding, “The ministry is also working to assiduously ensure that police reforms bring the requisite benefits to ensure that peace and good order is maintained all times in the society.”securedownload (1)
