Minimum wage is now $250

Bridgetown.

The minimum for shop assistants in Barbados is now $250, Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer- Suckoo made the disclosure during her contribution to the Estimates Debates yesterday.

Byer-Suckoo told the House of Assembly after discussion within the Social Partnership and the approval of Cabinet, the minimum wages for shop assistants had been increased to $250.

The Minister said,"This was not a unilateral high handed decission that was made. We met with the social partnership and had discussions back and forth, it was agreed that the $200 minimum for shop assistants, which set the bar for minimum wage across this country was inadequate and we set it at $250 knowing full well that we have to adjust it soon", Byer-Suckoo said.
