Met Office warns of possible storm in August

Piarco: The Meteorological Office has predicted a quieter hurricane season for the Caribbean in 2011, compared to last year but is warning that August is likely to be the month when a tropical storm may pose a direct threat to Trinidad and Tobago.

It is less than a month into the rainy season and several areas in and around Port-of Spain have already experienced severe flooding. In launching the 2011 Hurricane Season, Meteorologist Kenneth Kerr has predicted an active North Atlantic Hurricane season with a total of 12 to 14 named storms of which seven to eight of these could develop into hurricane status.

Climatologist Arlene Aaron is also predicting above normal rainfall in November for Trinidad with Tobago to experience similar levels in September. Meteorologist Shakeer Baig says the Met office has identified a west-coast convergence as a contributing factor to flash flooding in Port of Spain..

With the most heightened period of weather activity fast approaching, Director of Meteorological Services Emmanuel Moolchan says bad weather conditions experienced over the past few weeks were nothing out of the ordinary..

He says the Met Office will be issuing forecasts, bulletins, watches and warnings through it's website www.metoffice.gov.tt and through various media.

Moolchan says they are also considering the aspect of using text messaging as another avenue.
