Media not fair to the Government, says PM

Prime Minister

Port of Spain; Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar, said in a statement last night there were rogue elements within the local media that was bias against her Government. Another member of her People's Partnership Party was in total agreement with her statement, Sports Minister Anil Roberts. He launched an attack against the Guardian Newspaper where his grievance was in relation to a report carried by the newspaper last week; with respect to a complaint of alleged misappropriation of funds at the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board of Control.

The Prime Minister described the issue with the media as troubling and said it should be a concern to all citizens. She urged the Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago, to hold members of the media who were being unfair accountable for their actions. She acknowledged the fact that the Media was known as the Fourth Estate, and is in itself a political force in any democracy, but urged against them not being fair and unbiased.

Persad Bissessar is claiming the media is not reporting the Governments achievements and successes. She believe journalist are resorting to distorted facts. The duty of the media is to inform and educate truthful and fair information but it comes with serious responsibility. She noted she does not want to be at war with the media but just wish that they would "uphold old-fashioned journalism, in which the naked facts represent the holy grail," she added.

Minister Roberts chose to clear his name once again, and assured the audience that he was not under any probe by the Director of Public Prosecution. He criticised the media for reporting negative news about the People's Partnership Government.
