M&CC rehabs Sexton building, others under purview

IMG_20160216_112413Georgetown: As a part of an ongoing plan to restore the pristine state of the City, the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has begun rehabilitation of its buildings. These include the buildings that house the City Engineers staff; The Constabulary Officers, The Municipal Training Complex and the Office of the Sexton are being renovated.

According to Public Relations Officer (ag) Debra Lewis, the City Engineers Department was tasked with the restoration programme. “The City Constabulary building was refurbished; this included repairs, and painting of the historic edifice. Also, the Department building has expanded to accommodate the newly formed Traffic Management Unit.”

Currently, she said works on the City Engineers Building is near completion, repairs include removal of defective boards, replacing of the roof gutters and painting.

Also, Lewis noted that the employees of the Department were deployed to the City Constabulary Training School. This building was used to house a training complex, dormitory and Municipal Archives. The Council plans to upgrade the facility so that it would be on par with other institutions that are of international standard.

The Office of the Sexton that was in a state of disrepairs has been renovated. The Sexton Building is located in the Le Repentir Cemetery. This building has a register with records of decease family members, location in which their graves can be found. This information dates back to when they first internment was done on the 15th of March 1861.

Town Clerk, Royston King said in addition to providing training and requisite tools and equipment for employees, it is important that the employers provide a working environment that is conducive to health and is free from potential hazards. “I am cognizant that a safe and healthy work environment enhances production” King said
