Manufacturers want new legislation to speed up diversification process

Port-of-Spain: The Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association (TTMA) is welcoming President Maxwell Richards’ call for increased attention to be placed on the non-energy sector particularly the manufacturing sector.

The president made the call during his address at the ceremonial opening of Parliament on Monday.

The TTMA is calling for the streamlining of government services, the removal of bureaucracy, the facilitation of business and the necessary legislation to enhance the competitiveness and the ease of doing business.

The TTMA says it has consistently advocated for measures that would increase the long-term competitiveness of the manufacturing sector, such as investments in renewable energy with the development of solar photo voltaic technology and recycling, and is reiterating the need for the passing of the private sector version of the Beverage Container Bill to expedite this.

The Association says it supports the position that priority be given to the development of the manufacturing sector, as well as other new areas of non-energy related businesses, and is maintaining that this requires urgent investments in strategic developmental activities and the necessary government policies.
