Man remanded for assulting principal

Bridgetown.

Peter St Mark was remanded to HMP Dodds when he appeared in the District A Magistrate's Court this morning charged with assaulting principal of the Parkinson School, Jeff Broomes.

St Mark, 35, of Haggatt, St Michael, walked onto the school’s compound last Thursday and refused to leave when asked to by authorities.

He  then made his way into Broomes' office, assaulted him and snatched off his spectacles which was destroyed in the process.

It is understood that the attack was triggered after Broomes contacted St Mark  over the  attendance record of his step daugther, who did not attend school for an extended period but turned up for class on  Wednesday.

Prosecutor Sergeant Ensley Grainger objected to bail on the grounds that the offences were serious and that St Mark had previous convictions.

“For a person to enter onto a compound of an institution and attack a principal is a very serious matter. We need to protect society from this type of behaviour,” Grainger said, adding that he believed if St Mark was granted bail, “there exists the strong likelihood of a repetition of these or more serious allegations being levelled against the accused”.

St Mark, who is also accused of the criminal damage of the school's property was remanded until next monnth.
