Man homeless after lighting cigarette

Georgetown: A two-storey building was destroyed at Craig, East Bank Demerara Sunday morning. Fifty-three year old Harry David of Lot 145 Third Street, Craig is now homeless.

He said that he was in the upper flat of the building when he saw smoke erupt from the lower flat. Neighbors then formed a bucket brigade to assisting in containing the flames. However, this proved futile and the house was destroyed.

In recollecting, David said he lit a cigarette and attempted to throw the match in a container but it fell on a mat which was set alight after he went upstairs. The man who lives alone is supported by overseas based relatives.
