Make changes to the 2014 budget for the public good – APNU

[2]Georgetown : A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) continued with its country-wide outreach over the weeken. The Partnership held a Public Meeting at Rose Hall Town, East Berbice-Corentyne Region. The speakers were Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Brigadier David Granger, and APNU’s Members of Parliament, Mr. Basil Williams, Ms. Volda Lawrence, Mr. Christopher Jones and Dr. Rishi Thakur.

The main focus of the meeting was the 2014 Budget. Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Brigadier Granger told the gathering that the 2014 Budget has failed to present a comprehensive financial plan for the development of the material resources and for the improvement of the quality of life for the ordinary people. APNU speakers called on the PPP/C Administration to reduce the Berbice River Bridge toll; to increase the old age pension and public assistance; to increase Public Servants’ salaries. Calls were made for the restructuring of GuySuCo so that it could become a viable company. APNU Member of Parliament, Mr. Christopher Jones noted the absence of a National Youth Policy. Jones said; “young people in Guyana want good paying jobs, but sadly this Budget says nothing and offers nothing in the way of job creation.”

APNU also called for the introduction of programmes to relieve the plight of depressed communities and for the immediate introduction of a National Procurement Commission. APNU called on the PPP/C Administration to make changes to the 2014 Budget for the public good. APNU Member of Parliament, Mr. Basil Williams in his presentation said that the people of Guyana deserved a Budget that would lower the costs of living, stimulate growth and improve the quality of life for the working man and woman.

 

Yesterday Brigadier David Granger along with Opposition Chief Whip, Ms. Amna Ally joined Buxton residents Mr. Maurice Wilson and Mrs. Joycelyn Wilson to distribute kites to the children of the village. Over 200 kites were distributed.
