Mahaica man loses life after car plunge into trench

John WorrenGeorgetown: A driver employed by Bakewell Bakery died after his car plunged into a canal along the Ann’s Grove Public Road, East Coast Demerara,on Saturday night.

John Worren Ford, 26, of Lot 12 Helena No. 1, Mahaica, also on the East Coast of Demerara, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was taken following the tragedy.

His mother, Deoki Modan, who lives at Sophia, Greater Georgetown, said while she was in Mahaica Saturday night her son kept calling her mobile phone assuring that he would soon be home. Modan said Ford last called between 21:30 and 22:00 hrs saying, “Mom, yuh baby coming home next 15 minutes,” and those were his last words to her. He never showed up, but on Sunday morning she received a telephone call from the police informing her that Ford was involved in an accident.

“This morning the police call me and ask me if I know a man by the name John Ford.” She said the police then informed her that her son was involved in an accident and is at the Georgetown Hospital Mortuary.

The woman said she last saw her son sometime last week when he visited his niece who had delivered a baby at the Georgetown Hospital. Reports reveal that Ford was the driver of the vehicle when one of its tyres blew out. It is believed that he lost control of the vehicle and ended up in the trench. Another relative said that a policewoman was on her way to a wake with a few other people in Ann’s Grove when they observed that a vehicle was in the canal. Upon checking, they discovered Ford trapped in the vehicle, frothing from his mouth.
