Machel Montano is Power and Groovy Soca Monarch

Port-of-Spain: Mega soca star Machel Montano has won both the Groovy Soca Monarch and the Power Soca Monarch titles, stamping his authority as the country's premier soca artistes, a position that needed little reinforcement.

The show was held at the Hasely Crawford stadium and it was an evening of mega performances and specutacular presentations.

With a first prize of $2 million up for grabs in the power soca category and $500,000 in the grrovy competition, it was bound to be an intense competition as performer after performer spared no effort in attempting to wow the judges and sway the crowd.

Although there were ten other contenders in the power category, all eyes were on Montano and last year's runner-up Neil Iwer George.

Following Montano's triumph in 2011, the rivalry between the two grew in the lead up to the finals with George announcing his intention to dethrone the champion.

During his performance George made it clear he came out to win and at the end of his performance the crowd chanted his name repeatedly for an encore.

When it was Montano's turn to defend his crown, he held back no punches as he made his way through the crowd and began his performance of the popular "Pump yuh Flag", for a performance that included fireworks and other pyrotechnics.

He was also joined on stage by two of the country's most famous faces, Cricket Legend  Brian Lara and last season's Project Runway winnerm designer Anya Ayoung-Chee.

He ended his performance in spectucalar fashion, with a back-up jetting off the stage in a jetpack, flying above the crowd before disappearing to the back of the stadium.

In the end Montano's peformance eclipsed his rival by just three points.

It was a feat he would repeat in the groovy category with his popular "Mr Fete" knocking Kerwin Du Bois' "Bachannal" into the second spot.
