KI is Chutney Soca Monarch

Port-of-Spain: Kris "KI" Persad became the youngest Chutney Soca champion on Saturday night as he beat 17 other contestants to take home the coveted $1 million first prize.

It was a spectacular show at the Queen's Park Oval Saturday night, held for the first time in Port-of-Spain.

Among the contestants were Fiona Singh and Haresh Singh from Guyana and Sassy Ramoutar and Ian Ragga Joseph from New York.

Artie Butkoon was adjudged fifth place, followed by Nigel Sallickram in second and Rick Ramoutar, third.

But is was always going to be down to the two big names, defending champion Rikki Jai and the popular KI.

Jai would give a performance that came out of combatting a flu but would still captivate his audience.

He brought on stage Destra Garcia with whom he has a collaboration on the song, Pania, to aid his performance.

Three contestants later, KI performed his popular "Single Forever".

He would pause during his performance to take a pot shots at some of his competitors, including Rikki Jai who beat him into third place in 2011.

Jai would place second in the competition.
