‘Kanawan’ makes inaugural mooring at Parika

Nine months after arriving in Guyana, one of the US$7M Roll On/Roll Off Ferries, ‘Kanawan’ earlier today docked for the first time at one of the Stellings modified to received it.

The inaugural mooring has been declared “very successful,” and occurred at the Parika end of the Essequibo River.

The ‘Kanawan’ will make several such moorings in the coming days utilizing the “falling and washing tides.”

The vessel can be moored from either end, where it can load, or offload and this too will be tested in the coming days utilizing the various river conditions experienced.

The two vessels were acquired from China at a cost of US$14M, but funded by a US$17 M grant from the Chinese Government.

Each vessel has three decks and can hold up to 800 persons, 44 cars, and 20 Lorries and can travel at a test speed of 12.5 knots.
