IYPAD cultural festival for October 8

Georgetown : Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony said that approximately 56 different cultural groups from around Guyana will be recreating villages in three separate areas at the Guyana Nadtional Stadium, highlighting the three counties, Essequibo, Demerara, and Berbice.

This will be part of activities in commemoration of International Year of People of African Descent (IYPAD) billed for October 08, 2011.

Within these villages, there will be booths on display, showcasing crafts, food, and clothing among others as well as cultural performances depicting various African traditions and customs. There will also be a session dedicated to teaching people the art of African drumming.
The event will culminate with a concert entitled “Sankofa”, a mythical word, which basically means a cultural revival.

This concert will have a local and an international segment; the latter will see the participation from cultural group from Suriname. Initially a Ghanaian group was contracted to perform in this segment; however, due to unforeseen difficulties with their flight, they will now be coming to Guyana in December instead to be part of another activity.
The concert will also see performances by the Yoruba Singers, Natural Black and other prominent local artistes.
