Interfaith Harmony Week to be observed in first week of February

religious_symbolsGeorgetown: The Inter Religious Organization (IRO) announces the observance of World Interfaith Harmony Week which was proclaimed by the United Nations to be observed the first week of February, with the purpose of encouraging the spread of the message of interfaith harmony and goodwill in the world’s churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and other places of worship during that week, based on the theme Love of God & Love of one’s Neighbour, so as to promote a culture of peace.  

The week’s activities will begin with the annual State sponsored Prayer Breakfast & Exhibition of Sacred Literature, to be held on Monday 2nd February at 9:00 hours. This event will take place at the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal. and will feature inter-religious prayers and reflections.  Parliamentary Leaders of each political party or their representatives will make presentations on the theme;  these will be followed by the keynote address from His Excellency President Donald Ramotar.  At noon, the day’s activities will culminate with an Inter-Religious Symposium and panel discussion, to be held at the same venue.

The IRO is encouraging all religious organizations to engage in prayers for harmony on Sunday 1st February to mark the week’s observance.  During the week 2nd – 6th February Heads of secondary schools are invited to call on the various religious groups in their communities to share messages on the theme with their students.  Requests for such prayers and presentations may be made by calling 223-5380 or 647-9007.
