Influential Indian business executive visits Guyana on investment mission

Georgetown: Prominent Indian lawyer and business executive Dr. V.R.S. Sampath visited Guyana during the past week and held talks with Prime Minister Moses V. Nagamootoo and key government and private sector officials about bringing investors to Guyana.

Dr. Sampath, of Tamil Nadu, is the President of the Madras Development Society and founder of the World Tamils Economic Foundation, both of which network with strategic investors worldwide.

During his visit to Guyana, Dr. Sampath held talks with government ministers, the Private Sector Commission and the University of Guyana. He had indicated strong interest in investments in the rice, sugar, granite and ICT sectors and also in the establishment of a medical school and hospital in Guyana.

His visit, aimed at coordinating investor missions to Guyana follows attendance by Prime Minister Nagamootoo at the World Tamils Economic Conference in Chennai, India during October last.

On Thursday last, the Tamil Nadu advocate met with Vice-Presidents Carl Greenidge and Khemraj Ramjattan, Minister of Business Dominic Gaskin and Minister of Agriculture Noel Holder along with other ministers at Parliament Buildings. He was also chief guest at a reception on Friday evening at the residence of the Prime Minister.

Dr. Sampath has committed to returning to Guyana in the first quarter of 2017 with a team of investors to further pursue investment opportunities. During his one week scouting mission in Guyana he also visited Berbice where he looked at investment potential in the agricultural sector.
