Homeless shelter at Region Five to be named after the late Venezuelan President Chavez

Georgetown : May 6, 2013 is the proposed date for the commissioning of the Home for Rehabilitation and Reintegration (homeless shelter) at Onverwagt, Region Five, which is likely to be named after the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez because of that country’s input in the project.

Government’s spokesman Dr. Roger Luncheon advised of the commissioning date and that it is proposed to be named after Chavez because of the fact that he made incisive interventions in financing the project. Counterpart funding was provided by the Government of Guyana.

Street dwellers from the Night Shelter in Georgetown, which was an interim solution, will be transported to the Onverwagt facility.

The Home is expected to house approximately 180 persons and was built at a cost of approximately $402M.  It comprises two dormitories and an administrative building and includes kitchen, library and rooms for persons living with communicable diseases and disabilities.

It also includes an administrative residence for doctors and, an administrator who will be living within the facility, and other staff who will assist including a maintenance superintendent responsible for the maintenance work. There is also a separate building for security personnel.
