Georgetown : Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee is currently attending the 30th International Drug Enforcement Conference at the invitation of the Federal Drug Control Service of the Russian Federation and the Drug Enforcement Administration of the Department of Justice of the United States of America.

The Conference is being held from June 5-7, at the World Trade Centre in Moscow, Russia.

Accompanying the Minister to the Conference are Mr. Seelall Persaud DSM, Deputy Commissioner, Law Enforcement, Guyana Police Force and Mr. James Singh, Head of the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU).

The conference which is an annual event allows for policy makers and senior law enforcement officials of various countries of the world to discuss and develop additional strategies aimed at countering the illegal trafficking, manufacture and use of drugs as well as related illegal activities such as money laundering and the unlawful use of precursor chemicals.

During the event, the Minister will hold bilateral discussions with his counterparts aimed at collaborating in joint efforts to counter the illegal drug trade.

Already he has met with Mr. Igor N Zubov, State Secretary – Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. It was agreed during the meeting that bilateral cooperation between the two countries will be strengthened, specifically in the areas of training of police ranks including specialised training. During the meeting the two Ministers exchanged information on the Police Reform Programmes that both countries are currently undertaking. The Russian Minister showed strong interest in Guyana’s Community and Neighbourhood Policing Programmes.

The Guyanese Minister met with the Minister responsible for the South African Police Service, Mr. Nkosinathi Mthethwa at which bilateral discussions were held focusing on the drug trade. Both sides agreed to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in furtherance of that commitment. It was also agreed that a study would be done of the Triangular Drug Route – Guyana, Brazil and South Africa – with a view of suppressing it through joint efforts.

Minister Rohee also held a meeting with the Brazilian delegation that is attending the Conference.
