Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison receive UNESCO inscription

Bridgetown.

Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison yesterday evening were officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Property.

In the feature address held at the Inscription Ceremony held at the Garrison Savannah, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart implored Barbadians to embrace, treasure and preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Property.

"We must embrace this site as our own,it is now the responsibility of every citizen and resident of Barbados to treasure and to preserve this site not only to ourselves but the  entire world", Stuart said.

Director General of UNESCO Irina Bokova, described Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison as an outstanding example of colonial architecture and town planning.

"The site we celebrate today, bear witness to the countless traditions and exchanges between the free and enslaved members of diverse multicultural community which crafted the rich culture of the Anglophone Caribbean", Bokova said.

Hundreds of Barbadians joined the several dignitaries who attended the Inscription Ceremony.
