Heavy rains stop sugar harvest

Bridgetown.

Heavy rain in the first quarter of the year is creating problems for the sugar industry.

The harvesting of the sugar crop has been halted because the fields are too wet for the mechanical harvesters to operate.

The crop started on March 2 and was proceeding smoothly, until it was struck by torrential rains toward the end of April.

Industry officials say about 170,000 tonnes of canes have been harvested, and other  100,000 tonnes remainds in the fields.

So far Barbados has produced just over 16,000 of sugar.

The crop was expected to be completed by the end of June, but the heavy rains could mean an extended crop,
