Georgetown : The Ministry of Health has donated 72 white canes to the Guyana Society for the Blind, as Guyana joins in observing ‘Blindness Awareness Month’.

The support of these canes will allow these persons to enjoy mobility. They can be able to move around independently without having to feel like they are inconveniencing someone else

The canes which were formally handed over by Minister of Health Dr. Bheri Ramsaran will also be distributed to the branches of the Guyana Society for the Blind in Berbice and Linden.

The society’s Coordinator for the CXC programme, Ganesh Singh who was present at the ceremony noted that this year the society requested the canes in different sizes to assist children because the longer canes are difficult for them to utilise.

One of the students from the CXC programme Rosemary Ramit, noted the importance of the cane to these individuals. “This programme is very important because a cane basically makes a person mobile. Without my cane I can’t move around, you get so used to your cane, if you go out and you don’t have it, you just stand there, and you don’t know what to do.”

President of the institution, Cecil Morris expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Health for its contribution to the facility over the years.

He added that the society has a variety of activities planned for Blind Awareness Month, including a fitness walk, creating awareness in schools, and a thanksgiving service.

There is also a lime and social activity on May 26, which is open to all visually impaired individuals across the country.
