Health Minister gives up private practice after PM’s ultimatum

Port-of-Spain: Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan has given up his private practice and will retain his position as the Minister of Health after being called on the prime minister to choose between the two.

The minister issued a statement just after 10 pm tonight stating that after lengthy discussions and having reviewed the matter, and in the best interest of the country and consistent with the principles of integrity and sound ethical conduct, he has informed the prime minister that with immediate effect he will cease his medical practice and remain as Minister of Heath.

The minister says that he has decided in essence to put the country first.

Minister Khan says that if this is the best way he can serve his country he stands ready, willing and able to answer that call.

The prime minister issued the ultimatum after a newspaper report indicated that he had continued in private practise since his appointment on June 27th as Health Minister. The prime minister discribed the minister's decision to stay on in private practise as "untenable and inappropriate".
