Health Minister and team to visit Mahaicony residents-affected by heavy rain fa

20090104school-300x225Georgetown : Residents of Novar and Gulf City in Mahaicony Creek, Region Five have been affected by flood following days of constant rainfall.  In light of this situation, Minister of Public Health Dr. George Norton will be visiting and conducting an assessment of the affected areas.

Regional Executive Officer of Region Five, Ashford Ambedkar has confirmed that the areas have been affected, while noting that the high waters are in the creek itself.

Ambedkar said the Regional Administration is awaiting a report from Gulf City to see what interventions can be made. He noted that the persons, who had called him, reported that the water had been there for about two days and was not moving.

The rainfall had caused the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC) to reach the threatening level of 58.25 Georgetown Datum (GD), and the Ministry of Agriculture took the decision to release water from the conservancy, into the Northern Relief Channel of the Hope-Dochfour outlet, and via the eight-door sluice into the Atlantic Ocean. This action was taken to ensure the structural integrity of the EDWC’s earthen embankments.

Water continues to be discharged into the Atlantic Ocean through the Kofi, Cunha and Land of Canaan relief sluices into the Demerara River.
