General Secretary of the Barbados Worker's Union (BWU) Sir Roy Trotman has expressed concerns about the current state of the Barbados economy

According to Sir Roy this is the most turbulent time since he has led the BWU. The veteran trade unionist told a press conference at the BWU headquarters he is worry about the number of layoffs in the private sector and thinks that Government will have a big challenge to stop job losses in the Public Sector. Sir Roy said the umemployment figure might be 13 percent rather than the official figure of around 12.2 percent.

"I foresee that there are challenges to the Government to honour the no layoff agreement but I am equally conscious of the fact that there was a lot of talk about layoffs for some months now and I think that we have to bear in mind that the Government has to be the employer of the last resort and must be setting the exmple when crunch time comes", says Sir Roy.

The BWU head said that the construction sector required start up and the hotel industry is crying out for an injection to get people back out.Sir Roy said he could not recall a time when the economic climate was so difficult.

"It is the most turbulent time that I have seen during my time as a member of the BWU. There has never been anything like it", Sir Roy said.
