Guyanese youth to call for an increase in Job Opportunities

Georgetown: On the February 21, 2012, simultaneous action in over 120 countries will seek to send a unified message "This is a Wake Up Call". This peaceful, global action for positive change is an initiative of the ambassadors of One Young World, a non-profit organisation which creates a platform for youths to express their opinions on issues ranging from climate change to poverty, and to express ideas they think could bring about change.

According to Guyana's Wake Up Call coordinator, Guyana's demand has already been worded and it reads as follows: "Of the President of the Republic of Guyana, Donald Ramotar, we demand the presentation of a plan 6 months from today which emphasises the creation of job opportunities for the Guyanese youth, and tackles high levels of unemployment, especially among University graduates. We suggest the implementation of a Tax Act which offers tax incentives for employers who hire University graduates without experience and/or an act which makes it compulsory for a certain percentage of employees in both the Public and Private Sectors to be recently graduated youths".

This demand will be made to President Ramotar via a written letter, and through other mediums that will be revealed on February 21. Guyana will participate in the Wake Up Call movement along with the rest of Latin America, and a few Caribbean countries namely Jamaica, The Bahamas and Haiti. Most of the Latin American and Caribbean countries involved have issues surrounding unemployment, under employment and proper leadership. Jamaica, however, has decided to address their lack of proper maternal health care. The coordinators are aiming to attract global attention towards the Wake Up Call message by involving a critical mass of people across the globe. The Wake Up Call itself aims to empower people who participate in the Wake Up Call to believe that through widespread collaborative global action, ordinary people can exercise meaningful power over important global decisions.
