Guyana sympathises with US on Oklahoma tornado casualties

Georgetown : President of Guyana Donald Ramotar has expressed sympathy and emphatises with the President and the people of the United States of America on the devastating effects of the tornado which hit Oklahoma City on Monday last.

The message was forwarded to United States President Barack Obama through the US Embassy in Guyana.

The message read, “The horrendous toll caused by the tornado which cost lives and devastated homes in Oklahoma yesterday has struck a chord of sympathy in the hearts of the people of Guyana. On their behalf and that of the Government of Guyana and in my own name, I extend our deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with the families who have been affected by this tragedy. “

The tornado hit sections of Oklahoma City, covering 17 miles of ground in 50 minutes, damaging or destroying hundreds of homes, and businesses, schools and hospitals.  Winds reached speeds of up to 210 miles per hour, and many structures were wiped clean to their foundations.

The death toll is at least 24, with more than 200 injured, including 70 children.
