GTA facilitates Emergency Response training in North, South Rupununi

TrainingGeorgetown: As part of the Guyana Tourism Authority’s 2015 Tourism Awareness Month programme, tour guides, tour operators and hotel staff from nearby villages and lodges in North and South Rupununi received training in First Aid/CPR.

Thirty three (33) participants benefitted from the session which covered several topics including Emergency Action Plan, Aims of First Aid, CPR, Rescue Breathing, and sudden Illnesses, among others. Guides also participated in practical sessions in Emergency Response for various scenarios.

The objective of this training programme, conducted by two First Aid trainers from the Guyana Red Cross, Melissa Alstrom and Samesta Martin- Forde, was to ensure that tourism stakeholders and service providers acquire the necessary knowledge to provide first aid assistance to visitors, tourists and guests in the event of an emergency. It is also a requirement of the Tourism Regulations for Accommodation Establishments, Interior Lodges and Resorts, Tour Operations and Tour Guides to be certified in First Aid /CPR.

During the same period, the Guyana Tourism Authority also facilitated Portuguese language training for twenty one (21) persons from the Takatu Border Crossing,  including Immigration personnel, Customs Agents, Police Officers, Port Health Officers, and RDC representatives.

This two day basic conversational Portuguese language training was conducted by the Director of the International Language Institute, Mr. Enrique Couchman, in the RDC boardroom, Lethem and is intended to improve customer service relations, communication and expediting of the clearance process.

Earlier this year, the GTA also facilitated Dutch language training at Moleson Creek and conversational Spanish for frontline staff at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

In order to boost the level of hospitality skills in the industry , the GTA organized and trained six hundred and six  (606) persons last year, in the areas of Housekeeping, Front Office , Customer Service , First Aid and CPR, Culinary, Servers Training, Basic Spanish language and Bird Guiding.

The Ministry of Tourism and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) are committed to capacity building and institutional strengthening by facilitating training programmes and providing opportunities for the development of skills; 325 persons have received training in various areas for 2015.
