Granger wants Ramotar to engage Lindeners

Leader of Guyana’s Parliamentary Opposition, Brigadier (rtd) David Granger has upped the ante, in what he calls A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) solidarity with the plight of Lindeners.

The Guyana Government instituted a tariff increase on the electricity charges for the mining town saying that the two decade long subsidy that was in place has become too burdensome.

Granger and a number of supporters today staged a picketing exercise at the Office of the President, demanding that President Donald Ramotar engage the people of Linden.

Granger says that he does not want the matter to become a political one in that the people of Linden can speak for themselves.

He called for Ramotar to meet with them as soon as possible.

The Opposition has been arguing that any increase to the tariff in Linden has to be accompanied by a menu of measures to address the economic plight of Lindeners.

The once flourishing mining town now reportedly has a 70 per cent unemployment rate, but also consumes three times the electricity used by other Guyanese.

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, who also hails from Linden, has been arguing that Linden is not as depressed being peddled by sections of society and that the increase can be afforded.

The tariff increase was effected from July1, last.
