Georgetown : The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) conducted its second random selection of goods for examination, through a new process that has been recently been instituted by the Authority to ensure a more transparent process.

This exercise was held in the compound of the GRA on Camp Street, Georgetown, yesterday during which names were randomly drawn by citizens, who were waiting to do business with the entity.

This exercise is a regular feature of the GRA, and is coordinated by the Customs and Trade Administration Department.

The names that were pulled would be sent to the senior manager in charge of the goods examination unit, who will then inform the importers that their containers have been selected for 100 percent examination. These individuals would then be given a date to have the inspection completed.

The Authority’s Manager of Public Relations, Marcia Harris said that the main reason for this initiative is to avoid risks which are a threat to revenue. The reason for the drawing to be done openly by members of the public is to have transparency and to protect the integrity of the Customs Officers, Harris added.

“The drawing will be continued in this manner, members of the public are urged to take part of the drawings, updates on drawing and other information on this process will be made available to the public via the social media,” she said.
