GPL introduces smart meters to tackle electricity theft

GPL 2Georgetown: In an effort to reduce electricity theft countrywide, the Guyana Power and light Incorporated (GPL) says it has a contract to issue smart meters or Advanced Meter Infrastructure (Ami).

GPL’S loss reduction manager, Kumar Sharma says this will help to decrease electricity theft significantly.

Sharma says smart meters will allow customers to be disconnected from any of the GPL offices.

Customers will soon be able to gain easier access to their power consumption information with the implementation of advanced meter infrastructure.

This incorporates prepaid and post paid systems; hence the prepaid and postpaid meters will become obsolete.

The AMI also include systems to analyze the power quality problems such as surge voltages and distortion.
