GPL’s CEO confident company will meet August 31 deadline for new Wartsila units

 

Georgetown : The Guyana Power and Light (GPL), is assuring consumers that there will be an increase in generation capacity shortly, as the company is on schedule for an August 31 commissioning of the additional Wartsila generation units, which arrived in Guyana on May 17. 
Thus far, the company has completed installing the first unit and will be commencing with the second which will be followed by the extension of the building to house the generation units, according to the company’s Chief Executive Officer Bharrat Dindyal who updated media operatives during a tour of the Kingston facility where work has been progressing. 

 He noted that work to the structure which will be approximately 13 ½ metres long, is on schedule as most of the equipment have already been sourced. 
“The existing plant (Kingston), we had indicated that the units have achieved the hours for the first major service.

 

With the recent power outage, GPL is currently operating on 85 megawatts of potential capacity and with the addition of the two 7.7. MW generator sets which have a total of 15.6 megawatts, the CEO, is optimistic that there will now be an increase in not only capacity, but reliability.
