GPHC performs first operation in maternity theater

Georgetown : Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation ( GPHC) today disclosed that the first cesarean section has been performed in the Operating Theater of the Maternity Unit.

The young mother who shared this momentous occasion is 23 year old Mandy Smith, who gave birth to a healthy baby boy of 3kg 100g at 12:37h today. She is now resting comfortably in the Recovery Room of the Maternity Theater. Another procedure was scheduled to commence within hours of the first.

The Operating Theater was officially re-opened on 31 May, 2012 and it serves as part of an overall initiative by the Ministry of Health to reduce maternal mortality in Guyana.

This operating theater is conveniently located a stone’s throw away from the Pre-natal Unit of the Maternity Ward so expectant mothers no longer have to be transported via the ambulance to the Main Operating Theater which is located in the Ambulatory Care and Diagnostic Center (ACDC) building in the North Block of the hospital’s compound.

The theater is outfitted with all the requisite equipment, medical supplies and staff, who will function on a 24h basis to cater for any emergency case which may present. The majority of the equipment were donated by Global Links, a US based organisation and the Ministry of Health.
