Gov’t to introduce national minimum wage

Georgetown : Government has established a ministerial team to work to fine-tune the necessary procedures that would facilitate the establishment of a national minimum wage in Guyana. This initiative is the result of discussions and recommendations of a tripartite group, which comprises Government, the private sector and organised labour.

Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon at his post-Cabinet press briefing said that Cabinet was firmly in support of this initiative.

Labour Minister, Dr. Nanda Gopaul was asked to compile a comprehensive list of interventions that are necessary in order to give effect to the Government’s intentions.

The Ministerial team on the other hand, will be responsible for carrying out the necessary consultation process and garnering the inputs and support of all stakeholders in the national economic sectors.

“What currently exists is a deliberate attention to certain sectors particularly in the semi-skilled and unskilled categories for which annually, the Government undertakes to revise,” Dr. Luncheon said.parliament 4
