Gov’t to examine Chief Justice’s ruling on presidential term limit- AG

Basil WilliamsGeorgetown:  Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams said that the administration will be examining Chief Justice (CJ) (ag) Ian Chang’s ruling that the presidential term limit is unconstitutional. On Thursday, the CJ ruled on a 2014 challenge filed by Cedric Richardson.

The presidential term limit barred an individual from running for presidential office after they would have served two consecutive terms.

During an invited comment, the Attorney General noted that he hadn’t the opportunity to look at the judgment; however, he will be following up on the issue, since he would have to inherit the matter from the former Attorney General.

“It’s a question that we have to look at…I will examine the matter after reading the judgement and consult with my colleagues in Cabinet and staff within the Attorney General’s Chambers and determine the manner of our approach, if any,” the AG explained.

In 2014, Richardson, a Guyanese citizen, filed a constitutional challenge regarding the two-term limit for the country’s presidency. The challenge was filed by Attorneys-at-Law Emily Dodson and Shawn Allicock, on behalf of Richardson.
