Govt. holding fast to its position on AML Bill says Teixeira

Gail_teixeiraGeorgetown: The government is maintaining its defiant position on the anti-money laundering Bill, and Ms Gail Teixeira, one of the government’s main spokespersons, made that very clear that the government has had done just about everything it can.

But Teixeira says the government is attending, even if it is not willing to change its position; it hopes it can bend the arm of the opposition. The government is insisting that the work done so far is good enough to satisfy the demands of the Caribbean Arm of the Financial Action Task Force, which enforces global regulations against money laundering and the financing of terrorism. The opposition is saying even so, it wants amendments to the Bill that would get the local Financial Intelligence Unit into a properly organized and functioning body; and those that is what the government has a problem with. The government just needs two extra votes in the House to pass the Bill, and struck a deal with the AFC on Mashramani Day and was excited that it could have its way; that very night, one of the government’s main negotiators on the Bill, Dr Ashni Singh, the Finance Minister, crashed into a taxi, , and just a few days later, that deal suffered a crash of its own, with the AFC deciding to back the main opposition APNU, and now a deal is no where n sight as they continue to talk.
