Gov’t changing housing policy for the rich, says Opposition

Government is being accused of secretly changing housing policy in an effort to benefit a higher class of citizens. The allegations came from opposition leader Dr Keith Rowley. At a news conference this morning, Dr Rowley said that government is spending approximately $100 million to reconfigure apartments that are almost complete. He said after the amendments are made, the apartments will be put out of the reach of the 129,000 applicants who are waiting on housing from the Housing Development Corporation. Dr Rowley is insisting that the HDC has been mandated to make several changes.

"The government is upgrading the finish of these units to make them more upscale and palatable and marketable by digging up the tiles and replacing them with new tiles of an upscale nature, breaking down the walls to create the new configuration, removing the toilet fittings and putting in a higher grade toilet fittings, breaking out the windows to make them more fashionable, removing the sinks to replace them with other more luxurious types and the information we have here is that they’re going as far as to make room for air conditioning”.

The Opposition Leader is calling on the government to clearly explain what is happening and he also wants to know the government’s position as it relates to housing.
