Gov’t Artificial Insemination Programme produces twin calf

A proud Mr. Deo Narine with Black Girl and the twin AI bullsGeorgetown: NaleenieNarine, an Agricola, East Bank Demerara farmer welcomed two additional bulls into her animal family. The bulls were born yesterday with 26.5 and 24.6 kilograms respectively were a part of Government Artificial Insemination(AI) programme.

The semen was imported from one of the top ten ranked bull in the World, Mr. Manso.

Agriculture Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy today paid a visit to Narine’sAgricola home where the animals were inspected thoroughly by Veterinarian  and AI Technicians from the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA).

“I feel really happy right now. While this is not the first time we welcomed animals through the Government Artificial Insemination programme; it is the first time my husband and I welcome twins and we are really excited,” Narinesaid.

NaleenieNarine and her husband has been rearing cattles for the past 22 years, and runs a very successful small cattle farm.

Genetic improvement is an important strategy being used to increase meat and dairy production. The GLDA for 2013 alone has welcome six sets of twins which were successful born through its AI programme.

To improve the country’s breeding stock the Ministry of Agriculture has introduced the Artificial Insemination programme which has since been proven successful.
